The main theme for this occasional piece started life as part of a suite for brass band. The extended orchestral version which appears in these pages was written for a concert dedicated to the work of Elgar. Four contemporary composers were asked to write companion pieces to some of Elgar's best known compositions. I got "Nimrod" from the "Enigma" variations. This explains the title of the piece and the reference in the score to techniques and sometimes snatches of tunes from Elgar's oevre. You might notice the odd bar of "Sea Pictures", the 'Cello Concerto or "Land of Hope and Glory".
The piece works well in outdoor settings involving flag-waving.
